Sustainable "Genuine Leather"

The LEZZA BOTANICA project is a sustainable leather production method that upcycles plant-derived by-products for tanning and dyeing hides, which are themselves by-products of food production.

The process of "tanning" is necessary to transform "hide" into "leather," which is less prone to decay and becomes soft and supple.
Products finished with "tannin tanning," one of these methods, develop a unique natural texture, offering rich character and the enjoyment of aging.
Among these, tanning with tannins extracted from plants is called "vegetable tanning," which is known for being environmentally friendly and has recently gained increasing attention.

While it is common to use mimosa bark and other materials for vegetable tanning, "LEZZA BOTANICA VINO" is surprisingly tanned and dyed with wine pomace (grape pomace) generated during wine making.
Tomita Kogyo, a leather trading company with a history dating back to 1923, successfully extracted polyphenols, oils, and pigments from pomace that can be used for tanning and dyeing.

This innovative sustainable leather reuses "hide," a food by-product, and "pomace," a plant-derived by-product that was originally disposed of as industrial waste. Another appealing feature is its antibacterial and deodorizing properties due to polyphenols.
The deep hues truly evoke the astringency of wine. A beautiful, gentle bag with a story has been born here.

Toyooka is Japan's premier city for bags. The techniques of its original craftsmanship are said to date back to the Kojiki.
Currently, approximately 150 bag-related companies are concentrated within a 5km radius of Toyooka City center,
and are said to produce about 70% of all domestically made bags.
Toyooka Kaban is a regional brand that boasts a rich history and technical prowess.
Only high-quality bags, like this one, that pass strict inspection criteria for stitching and materials,
are certified.
